Quitting Smoking An Addiction or Habit ? (Part 2)

If smoking is not a 100% physical addiction what is it? Well, you would be more accurate in describing it as a psychological addiction.

What is a psychological addiction? It is a mental urge or reminder to do something because of a particular trigger or stimulus. Let me explain. If you ask a smoker the times they normally reach for a cigarette they will list somthing very similar to the following:

1) With a coffee first thing in the morning
2) Before breakfast
3) After breakfast
4) In the car on the way to work
5) Whilst walking from home to the bus / tube / train
6) From the bus / tube / train to work
7) During regular work breaks ( every hour or 90 minutes or ?)
8) Around meals
9) With an alcoholic drink
10) When I am on the telephone
11) When I feel stressed
12) when I am bored

These times or events and many more trigger a response in the smoker to smoke. It's a bit like when you think of salt you think of pepper. In other words the smoker has made an association between these times and events. An association is something you have just gotten used to being there or happening. In other words it has become habitual. You do one thing and the other comes with it. You eat a meal and then you light up.

Habits are automatic responses that we have to many events and/or stimuli. They are also learnt responses. we are not born with them... they are acquired via repitition.

If you think about aboutit, one of the reasons humans are successful is their ability to learn something new and rapidly make it into a habit, second nature, something that can be done without thinking about it. This is really what a habit is. The marvellous thing about smoking mainly being a habit is that you. the smoker are in control and can change it.

Everytime we change jobs because of a promotion or jump to a new organisation we are dropping old habits and picking up new habits. The new organisation will do things differnetly from the old one. New procedures, new systems and new personnel all have to be gotten used to. So as the new employee for a little while it feels all new but quite soon we get to know where things are, how this organisation likes things to be done and we develop new habits and we feel secure and confident.

The same is true when we move home. A new home in a different location brings with it different neighbours, shopping habits, and new routes and travelling arrangements. It seems strange to start off with but very soon we get used to it and it becomes second nature. It becomes a habit.

This is the same for stopping smoking. We survived perfectly well before we started smoking and we can survive just as well as a non-smoker again. It really is about just dropping an old outdated habit.

One of the best forms of support for dropping any habit is hypnotherapy. Hypnosis enables positive suggestions for change to be absorbed, accepted and understood by the powerful part of the mind, the subconscious.

Treadmills Understanding the Technical Aspects

Once you set out to buy a treadmill, you can be sure that you will have enough options available to get your mind buzzing. So the ideal thing is to have some defined ideas of what aspects are required from your treadmill, and what is simply out of the question.

Horsepower has continuously baffled buyers when they look to choose a motorized treadmill. Some dealers cash in on the confusion and rant the 'bigger the better' rhetoric. Therefore, you have to be well versed, or at least apparently well versed, in what you want. A 2.0 HP motor would do well for your treadmill, anything less than 1.5 is certainly going to wear out much quicker than you'd expect, so go for the optimum option. The idea is to look out for the gimmicks don't pay heed to the terms like 'peak horsepower' or 'treadmill duty'; they mean nothing in the long run when you want consistent speed. The important thing is the 'continuous duty'; which marks that the motor will be able to produce a continuous 2HP for a full 24 hr motor usage. It is a practice with manufacturers to stamp the 'continuous duty' horsepower on DC motors, so having a look under the hood wouldn't hurt either.

Now a motor's HP will get you going, but bad Motor Electronics can mar the quality of experience you will have with your treadmill, not to mention the amounts you will have to pay for repairs! Seasoned manufacturers make sure that their treadmills have a steady clip which utilizes a microprocessor to sense the belt load and adjust accordingly for silky operation. So the best treadmills will be the ones that sense your resistance if you try to slow down, and adjust accordingly to keep the set pace going smoothly. Try slowing down a treadmill while hanging on to the handle bars, and you'll know what I'm talking about. A low quality, cheap treadmill will show her displeasure at your rudeness by jerking and groaning, but the quality ones, I have already described.

The Motor Toque is the thing that rotates the shaft which ultimately moves against your load. So plainly speaking, the motor torque has to be high to take the load of a human body, a potentially heavy human body at that. It's simple enough to understand that you need high torque for your treadmill. But also, the number of revolutions per second have to be low. Otherwise the treadmill might make you appreciate it at high speeds but at low speeds the high revs would really tax the motor. And consequently the motor will not last long enough to justify a good buy.

With a variety of treadmill available, the buyer should be sure what kind of Speed he wants from his treadmill. Whether you want to use it for running, jogging, or just walking determines which machine would be best for you. For walking, speeds from 0 to 6mph would do fine, but for runners the best treadmill would be the one which offers speeds from 0 to 12 mph. Running a motor at top speed of its speed limit over a long period of time is a sure way to wear out the motor is a hurry, so avoid that if you don't like to pay for repairs. For starters, the safe speed is half a mile, per hour, to make sure that the jerk of the initial start won't spill you over.

The treadmill's Belt has to suit your operation style as well. If you want to use the treadmill for running the belt should be 18 to 22 inches wide at least, to keep the runner safe. While the length would have to suit long strides for runners so something between 50 to 54 inches would be good. If the length or the width is not optimum for your use, then stay clear of such treadmills, as tripping on deck moving 5 mph is very likely to have you end up doing crosswords in a hospital bed. With manufacturers competing to be the best treadmill makers, the better ones provide two-ply belts that last longer and are less likely to curl at the sides. So that's the recommended stuff as it will last longer than a cheaper single ply belt. The treadmill Deck should have shock absorbing qualities to recommend it. Usually a good manufacturer will make sure that the deck provides ease to the user. In comparison with roads, a good treadmill deck provides almost 40% shock absorption to lessen the impact on the feet and joints. Therefore, for buyers who have joint problems, or those who don't wish to develop any, the best thing is to go for well cushioned, pre treated decks. This will, of course, result in fewer maintenance requirements. Though more impact protection is certainly going to hit you right where it matters; on the wallet.

Though it is necessary to have the necessary Resilience, all the talk about the impact protection shouldn't deceive you into buying a cheap treadmill with an overly soft deck. What you need is a deck that absorbs some of the impact; rubber bushings under a flexible deck serve the purpose ideally. However, when you go out to actually shop for the best treadmill for you, you have to remember that there are no set standards for cushioning and provision of resilience. The cushioning varies from treadmill to treadmill almost. Review treadmills; try out as many as you can, be critical. Don't fall for 'the softer the better' sales line; resilience is not meant to make the deck spongy or bouncy, a good pair of shoes and a decent deck resilience is enough to provide relief to your feet and joints, so go for it!

For treadmill Rollers though, 'the bigger the better'. This logic is based in simple physics; rollers with larger diameter have more surface area so the bearings have to do a lot less work in comparison with smallish rollers. Plus there is the belt to take care of, if you have small rollers the belt will have to put up with more tension and consequently there will be more repair work needed as well. And of course the larger rollers have more load bearing capacity so they need less repair work than the smaller rollers, who would be rolling themselves rugged if you regularly take up high speeds. Also, keep in mind that solid rollers are better than hollow ones, and prefer steel rollers to aluminum, which start to form an almost sand paper like material between the belt and the roller surface in quick time.

Though treadmills offer wide range of Incline options, they usually vary between 2-25%. Quite understandably, cheap treadmills have manual incline options but the costlier ones offer motorized incline features. Again, motors make the treadmill more complicated piece of equipment so the repair charges increase, along with the initial price. The thing to keep in mind about incline motors is that they should be quite about their efforts, if they groan as they increase incline then beware, they will die down on you a lot sooner than you'd expect. It can be easy to look for the widest range of choice and decide upon that, but seriously speaking, mostly you don't need more than 10% of incline as more can be hazardous for health. So, an innovative way might be to go for the motorized incline treadmills which keep your heartbeat in check and automatically adjust the incline to keep it smooth. Those who still can't get their heartbeat to the optimum high can just think how much they paid for the treadmill; I bet the treadmill would go downhill if it could!

Potentially the most luring thing about a treadmill is its Control Panel or console. There is a wide variety of features available on these consoles; from a speed monitor to heart rate monitor, electric incline control, distance and time, the treadmills boast a variety of features. However, too many buttons and gauges may get confusing, as well as potentially risky because they complicate the treadmill further and increase repair costs. There are LCD displays in the cheap treadmills while the high-end treadmills use LED displays that emit light from the display to make them more useful. Displays that are large simple and readable are the best options for those who don't want to spend on luxuries such as the high-end treadmills. A great feature of some high-end treadmills is the display that show error in case some part of the treadmill isn't in perfect health, definitely a good thing to have on hand, but not necessary. Ideally, the control panel should be the last thing on your mind when you decide on a treadmill, they can catch your fancy at one glance and then you wouldn't make many smart choices afterwards, beware!

A Treadmill has a Motor Controller which is an electrical power board that polices the current of the motor. Usually they are either Pulse Width Modulated board (PWM) or Solid State Control Rectifier board (SCR). A PWM board provides more DC voltage than the SCR one, as it has DC current running. Therefore, PWM boards are much quieter than SCR boards, which is recommendation enough. To add to that, they require less repair services as there are no chokes and filters to worry about, and the stronger current results in more tolerance while the heavier users are on. If you still aren't convinced then let me add that the PWM have lower electric costs, and they produce less heat as opposed to the SCR boards. Therefore, their life and performance are enhanced to make them user friendly and economical in the long run.

Heart Rate Control is essential for optimum workout in the least amount of time. The more effort you make the higher the heart rate is the simple rule with the stuff. It is ideal to have a heart rate monitor on your control panel to keep the rate in check, going over board with too much effort can damage the heart, so keep an eye on it. As for the quality of heart rate monitors, the idea is to choose one that of the interactive monitors. These not only keep the heart beat in check but also increase or reduce the incline to keep your heart rate optimum. Good heart rate control monitors use chest straps for evaluation, while other, less accurate monitors use ear and finger clip pulses for monitoring purposes. Usually, the Frame of the treadmill is made of either aluminum or alloy steel. Though steel has the potential to rust quickly but, if you take good care of it, they are stable enough to do you proud. Aluminum, on the other hand, is lighter than steel and provides easy portability, plus it doesn't rust. However, the sturdiness of aluminum is low and it is not advisable to choose it ahead of steel for that very reason. Another important thing about frames is the way they are made. Welded frame should be preferred over bolted ones; simply because bolts and are far less durable in the long run, thought they might make moving easier, but that still isn't enough to recommend them over welded frames.

Handlebars on treadmills are used for stability and balance so they should be within the reach of the user if he needs to use them. However, before selecting a treadmill, be sure that the handlebars do not come into the path of your arm motion whether you walk or run. The handlebars should be sturdy, avoid plastic ones as they might not last much. Plus the grips have to be comfortable for easy usage. It really doesn't matter how many handlebars are there in your treadmill, they can be one or two rails over the front of the control panel or a couple on the sides. What does matter however, is that handlebars should be out of your way, a swinging arm hitting a handlebar on the full might not be the ideal way to exercise, so choose wisely.

Like other moving machines, motorized treadmills should have Safety features that reduce accident potential to a bare minimum. Handlebars, as we have discussed, play a very important role in safety of the users. Along with those, emergency shut off is something that needs to be present in a good treadmill. Having said that, it would be no use to have an emergency shut off switch if it is out of reach, so check that as well. Similarly, the controls to limit the incline or speed or to turn to a gradual shut down should be within the user's reach as well. Make sure that the treadmill has a safe starting speed and a gradual shut down as well, jerky beginnings or abrupt slowing may put the user in a bit of a tumble. An inbuilt circuit breaker is always handy for expensive motorized treadmills so in case of power breakdowns or accidental power problems the treadmill should shut its system down to prevent damage to the machine.

The Warranty; A quality treadmill is a long term investment. When you pay top dollars for the best treadmills, remember that you should have a guarantee that the machine will work properly over at least over a period of 1-3 years. Mostly good manufacturers offer lifetime warranty on frames while the motorized parts, electronics along with the deck and belt should have a minimum of 1 year guarantee with labor to change the problematic parts in that period. Reliable manufacturers provide even 2-3 years warranties for the parts but 1 year of labor, which is fair enough. Guard against paying added money for extra warranty as that is not likely to do you much good. However, it is always helpful to find out if the treadmill you are looking to buy will have its parts available for some time to come. Surely you don't wish your treadmill to become redundant material two years down the lane.

For most people, the Price of the treadmill becomes the check that hold them back from choosing the best option possible. Usually you would find that below 1000$ are the sort of treadmills we have done our best to guard you against. So for a quality motorized treadmill, be prepared to spend over a 1000$ at least. The high-end treadmills average over 3000$ so they rattle your pocket considerably when you go for those, but as we have discussed earlier the competitive market has done consumers some amount of good, so some excellent treadmills are available around the 2 K mark as well. The catch is to remember that buying a treadmill is a long term investment for you, so have to assess the feasibility according to your own resources. You can go for refurbished treadmills or used treadmills that are in good condition, but consider only quality treadmills if you buy a used treadmill, a low quality refurbished treadmill will certainly not be a good buy. Choose wisely, live well!

Yoga and Christianity a Conflict?

Being a practicing Christian myself, there are very few things in Yoga that conflict with Christianity. Some critics argue that Yoga and Christianity cannot co-exist, and yet we know that Yoga is not a religion.

However, that depends on your opinion. Recently, I was reading about someone who claims Kundalini is ?new age witchcraft.? Sorry to say, another person recently stated, ?Good Christians should avoid the devil?s exercise,? in reference to Yoga.

Are the Salem witch trials still so close to our hearts? These claims are interesting because ministers and priests have been practicing meditation for centuries, without any complaints.

I suppose, if someone devoted enough time to meditating on bad thoughts, meditation would be a bad experience.

To be honest, it depends upon what you meditate about; and in truth, within some schools of Yoga, Hinduism, or Buddhism is taught. For me, this has always been a conflict, as I love Yoga, but have no desire to change my faith.

The many teachings of Yoga and meditation, are non-sectarian. Now, if Yoga were a religion, which would it be? The principles of Yoga are universal.

The Yamas and Niyamas are similar, in principle, to the Ten Commandments, but as a Christian you have the right to pick and choose what you want from Yoga. You also have the right to avoid sectarian ashrams.

Yoga practice, and meditation, give many Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, and Moslems, a closer connection to God, but there will always be someone who feels tempted to change their faith.

Let?s be honest, the people who worry about a sudden change of faith are, for the most part, rooted in two distinct camps of thought.

1. Someone who is on the fence about their own religion and not quite sure where they really stand.

2. Severe intolerance of any idea that is new or might result in opening the mind.

Let?s stop the intolerance now. When you are driving in your car, waiting in line, or come face-to-face with someone who is different from you, please set an example for your children and give the other person a break.

How To Eradicate Depression

This article is all about beating depression. I am a person who suffered from long bouts of depression, however after deciding to change my whole outlook on life, I now have a much happier, successful and stress-free life. I will explain how I went about achieving this new life.

As I grew older and especially when I was in my early twenties, I used to always compare my life with other people I knew, for example my friends. It seemed to me that my life was so much more of a struggle than what their's was and that most of these people had so much more going for them and so much more to look forward to than I did.

I was not happy at the hand of cards I had been dealt and would regularly be down in the dumps, feeling sorry for myself. I had a number of issues in my life which had a major impact on my self-confidence and self-esteem, which would also lead me into depression. This issues including a weight problem, a stutter, a bald patch on my head and I am quite short in height compared to the average man.

I was in a regular state of depression and found it very difficult to pull my self out of it. The stress for example of socialising when you have a stutter and trying to gain employment would take a lot out of me. My hair started to turn grey when I was only twenty-one years of age.

I was not content at always being depressed and at the age of twenty-two, I decided to attempt to change my whole life. I had to have a whole new approach and a totally different thought process, in a nutshell I needed to chill out, think in a far more positive way and learn how to de-stress.

This was not going to be easy however it was essential to do. I started to read many self-help type books and books about eradicating depression. I learnt many things such as worrying about a situation makes it even harder, not easier and that in life all you can do is to try your best, therefore whatever the outcome you can feel proud that you gave it your best shot. It is also important to remember that we only live once and that that life could come to an end tomorrow, therefore we should treat every day as if it is the last and to enjoy ourselves.

The main change I made was that I started to think and compare my life to people I was reading about in the newspapers or watching on the television instead of comparing my life to my friends for example. From learning about countries in the third world and reading about certain disasters and terrorist acts, I realised what a fool I had been and that I was actually one of the lucky ones. If and when I start feeling down or depressed, I quickly switch on the news and it soon shakes me out of that temporary depressive state.

The Journey from Back Pain to Yoga Class

Why are doctors referring their patients, who have chronic back pain, to Yoga classes? How many studies have been conducted on back pain and Yoga? Is Yoga a ?cure all? for back pain? What kind of Yoga class is best for back pain? Let?s look at all of these issues and see if we can clear up some answers.

It is conservatively estimated that more than half of the world adult population suffers from some sort of back pain. Yoga, for back pain, is the most popular subject that teacher interns write about at our Yoga teacher training center.

However, this does not explain why so many doctors, within the United States, refer their patients to Yoga studios as an additional alternative to medication and physical therapy. The truth is, that within the U.S., there have been very few studies, and I only know of one in particular, which was the Group Health Cooperative study, which recently took place in Seattle, Washington.

Therefore, one study is not the answer; especially one study which just happened. The truth is, most of the studies on back pain and Yoga, as a form of therapy, are taking place in India. So, why does your family doctor, chiropractor, or orthopedic doctor, take a leap of faith outside the view of traditional western medicine? To put it simply, doctors read and continually educate themselves. They do not look down the narrow path of medicine that is laid down by bureaucracy.

Yoga is relatively inexpensive, in comparison to prescription medicines, so why bother to do a study? In comparison to the joint ventures, and potential profits involved in pharmaceutical studies, Yoga can?t promise a ?big pay day.? Yet, the fact that physicians, within the United States, are willing to ?look outside the box? for answers, speaks volumes in regard to their integrity. Doctors are often accused of being too quick to prescribe medicines, but the public often demands quick and effortless solutions in regard to health care.

Is Yoga really a ?cure all? for back pain? In short, the answer is ?no.? How can I say that? Nothing is a cure all for back pain, but Yoga helps most of the students I work with. No prescription can claim 100% patient satisfaction either. Odds are that most people, with pre-existing back pain, who take up Yoga classes for relief, will reduce the number of pain killers needed. This fact has been stated by my Yoga students over the years.

If you have pre-existing back pain, which style of Yoga should you seek out? Regardless of style, you may want to observe a Yoga class before trying it. You should seek out a gentle style, and you should talk to your prospective Yoga teacher ahead of time.

Stay away from vigorous Yoga classes. I would advise against taking part in my Vinyasa Yoga class, but I would welcome you with open arms in my Restorative Yoga class. Why do I say this? Yoga styles, class formats, lesson plans, and teachers differ.

My suggestion is that you get a private session first, and your Yoga teacher will work with you ?first hand.? If possible, get a referral from your doctor, or from a friend, who practices Yoga. This will help you avoid the guessing process.

I Think I Have an Eating Disorder and Want to Stop

An eating disorder is a life threatening condition that often requires professional assistance and support to overcome. If you think you have an eating disorder it is critical that you seek out the help and support you need to overcome your condition.

Beating an eating disorder can prove very rewarding and open new avenues of opportunity you never dreamed of. You will no longer be tied down by food and your emotional as well as physical health and well being will improve substantially. Often the first step to improving your health is to understand the causes of eating disorders.

HOW DO I KNOW I HAVE AN EATING DISORDER?

There are many signs and symptoms that are indicative of an eating disorder.

Consider asking yourself the following questions:

- Do you obsess about food and eating?

- Do you deny yourself food at times even when you feel hungry?

- Do you often withdraw from social activities involving eating?

- Do you often feel fat even if you are not fat or overweight?

- Do you exercise excessively after meals or to the point of pain or injury?

- Do you purge (vomit) after eating?

- Do you regularly use laxatives or diuretics to control your weight?

- Do you often eat large volumes of food uncontrollably?

If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, you may have an eating disorder.

ANOREXIA AND BULIMIA

Anorexia is a type of eating disorder that is often characterized by starving oneself thin. People who are anorexic often do not allow themselves to eat more than 500 or less calories per day.

Bulimics tend to eat large quantities of food and then purge them, through vomiting or laxative use.

Both anorexics and bulimics may exercise excessively. There are other types of eating disorders as well including binge eating disorder where you consume large quantities of food over and over again but don?t necessarily purge.

WHERE TO GO FOR HELP

If you feel you may have an eating disorder it is vital that you seek help. Recognizing that you may have a problem is actually the first step toward recovery.

The good news is you can eat a healthy and well balanced diet that doesn?t require that you follow a strict or rigid routine. A flexible diet will help you remain fit and a normal weight. A nutritionist or dietician can help you develop a healthy and well balanced meal plan that is easy to follow and will help boost your spirits.

Eating disorders often result from distorted thinking about yourself, your body image and the way others perceive you. Part of recovering from an eating disorder requires that you recognize that your body isn?t related to your identity and that the two are actually separate. You may need professional help distinguishing between the two and identifying the triggers that are causing you to engage in distorted eating patterns.

Many eating disorders are simply a way to mask your emotional pain. If you have an eating disorder, don?t keep it a secret. Talk to friends or family members or seek assistance from your healthcare provider or an online support community. There are numerous groups online that can help you work through your emotional pain and start your journey toward healing.

Candida Yeast Infection : Many Have it Few Know it

Let's say that a person especially a women has a sore throat and takes an antibiotic as treatment. She will feel better immediately after taking the antibiotic, the pain will be gone and his body temperature will be normal. But after taking the antibiotic it is very possible to notice something odd in her underwear, a discharge she hasn?t had before.

This is a very common case of Candida yeast infection. If the person goes back to the doctor she finds out that the Candida treatment procedure is very simple and causes no pain.

This could happen to anyone. But before worrying about suffering from Candida yeast infection, you should know some basic stuff about this disease.

First of all, you have to know what exactly Candida yeast infection is. This infection is also known as candidiasis (which is pronuounced as can-dih-dy-uh-sis) and it is describing a very common infection that is being caused by a fungus called Candida. The fungus is similar to yeast, so the infection borrowed its name. An important aspect you should be aware of is the fact that every person carries small amounts of Candida fungus is his/her body. These fungi don?t cause any infection because the balance between the bacteria and other factors is at the right level and the bacteria are not multiplying to cause the infection. The infection occurs when the fungi?s number is growing above the normal level. Warm, moist areas of the body like the mouth or the vagina are the most usual places where the bacteria is multiplying and causing the infection. When the vagina is being affected by the infection, the disease is called vulvovaginal candidiasis.

As previously said, the Candida yeast infection is being caused by the overgrowth of the Candida fungi. This could happen for a lot of reason. Pregnancy or stress may cause it as well as some illnesses which affect the immune system. Even some medicines like birth control pills or steroids may cause the Candida yeast infection. But the antibiotics are the most dangerous as they kill the bacteria which is preventing the overgrowth of the Candida fungi, consequently the infection is on its way. Another cause for the Candida yeast infection could be high blood sugar, but in young females? case. Girls who are suffering from untreated diabetes present a higher risk of suffering from with Candida yeast infection.

Even underwear may cause Candida yeast infection if it is too tight or if it is made out of nylon which is usually preventing the body from breathing. This fabric is creating a hot, moisture environment which is perfect for the growth of Candida fungi. Showers and very scented sanitary products can also modify the balance between the good bacteria and the Candida fungi, allowing the latter to multiply and lead to a Candida yeast infection.

Girls should know that Candida yeast infections are more obvious right before their periods because of all the changes at hormonal level. And they should also know that they can get Candida yeast infection even if they don?t have any sexual activity. They shouldn?t worry, the Candida yeast infections are not sexually transmitted diseases but they can be rarely passed from one sexual partner to another. But these cases are very rare and they don?t require immediate Candida yeast treatment.

Candida is a common disease of our days. If you are looking for good information on candida yeast infection and candida treatment advice join us.

Are You Starving to Lose Weight?

It?s never too late to rethink on your diet plan and make fresh and realistic health resolutions. It is the right time to take stock of the situation. Ask yourself: Are we being fair to ourselves when we make these strict guidelines of diet and exercise? Most people recoil at the thought of dieting and exercising, especially on a cold winter morning. And for all those people who are fed up of diet dictums, the good news is that the best way to lose weight is not to diet or deprive yourself of all the good things in life. If this sounds too good to be true, wait till you try this:

Wellness - the latest buzzword to hit the health industry - is actually the best way forward. Most people who plan strict diets do it in the hope that after losing the extra kilos, they will look ravishing. But the truth is that lusterless sagging skin or loose abdominal muscles are not the result that people want. What we want is a happy, healthy, svelte figure munching an apple. But alas, that is not what we end up with very often. Therefore, after trying to lose weight for the nth time, it is now time to stop dieting forever and yet look slim.

Wellness is not only about losing weight, it is also about a positive mindset and transforming oneself into a holistically healthy person. This kind of a change in focus will not only result in weight loss but also give you great skin, good hair, a glowing persona and best of all, freedom from diets. Here is what the wellness and diet schedule entails:

oUnderstanding your food weaknesses and indulging in them two times a week.

oMaintaining a diet log book.

oPick up a routine that you enjoy which is like an exercise: dancing, or walking the pet, floor exercises with music etc.

oNever deprive yourself. Always add new healthy habits to the current schedule, like having a yummy soup in the evening instead of tea and a scrumptious salad during lunch with olives, balsamic dressing and some greens and cheese cubes.

oEnjoy your meal. Many people who eat hurriedly always miss out on the flavors, do not feel satiated and end up compensating by overeating.

oAnd if all this does not convince you, count the number of times you have struggled through a diet program only to regain the weight with a few extra kilos.

oLooking at unhealthy habits and finding alternatives. For example, if you are prone to drinking too much of tea/coffee, substitute some for herbal teas which smell and taste good. If you eat too much of fried food, learn to make toasted snacks or baked snacks, and experiment with new roasted snacks.

oDo not starve or eat less. When we cut down on quantities, our emotional system retaliates, so the best option is to add healthy foods to the diet before cutting out on food suddenly.

Fat Facts TransFats: What They Are Why They Are Bad and How to Avoid Them

HI FOLKS,

I want to tell you about trans-fats. In our food, we find 3 types of fat;

?Saturated fat, which is mostly of animal origin and should be eaten only in small amounts, as saturated fats raise blood levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol. Diets high in saturated fat are linked to heart disease, hypertension (high blood pressure) and arterial damage.

?Unsaturated fats are generally healthy and usually of plant origin. These fats reduce the blood levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol, and increase the levels of HDL (good) cholesterol. A majority of the fats in your diet should be unsaturated (oily fish, olive oil, nuts, seeds, avocados).

?Trans-fats are mostly artificially produced; they are cheap and have a longer shelf life that natural fat. Trans-fats also increase the blood levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol, and here is the double whammy; they also decrease levels of HDL (good) cholesterol. These guys are BAD for you.

When you look at the nutrition label on a packet, you should find fat separated into saturated and unsaturated; giving you an idea about how healthy the food is. Foods high in saturated fats should be used minimally. Only occasionally will you find trans-fats listed here. To find them, you often have to look at the ingredients where they will be labeled; hydrogenated fats, shortening or partially-hydrogenated fats.

Trans-fats have no nutritional benefits, and are actively unhealthy; linked to heart disease, hypertension, damaged and blocked arteries, stroke, diabetes, lowered immune systems, low amounts of ?cream? in breast milk, impaired absorption of vitamins and minerals, and general digestive disorders. They are so widely used in food production, that you will find them everywhere. They are found in some restaurant and fast food, cakes, biscuits, puddings, prepared meals, supermarket bakery products, pastries, chocolate (especially with soft fillings), diet products, sauces, mixes, cooking fat, margarine, old cooking oils, yep, pretty much everything. Occasionally they are not labeled at all, especially in margarines, so swap to butter, or choose a spread specifically labeled ?contains no trans-fats.?

It is believed that there are health problems of epidemic proportions looming just over the horizon. An entire generation of children have been brought up consuming foods containing significant quantities of these fats. Doctors are finding teenagers with levels of arterial damage and hypertension previously only found in middle-aged people. There is growing concern that trans-fats are destroying our health, and reducing our life expectancy.

Make sure that you keep your eyes peeled for these unhealthy fats, especially in food given to children. Check the back of packets for hydrogenated fats, or choose organic foods, as hydrogenated fats are prohibited in organic food. Happy eating, Vikki.

Save Yourself from the Terrible Ear Infection

Ear infections and earaches are common illnesses that plague just about 10 million Americans a year. They can cause immense pain that make it tough on you to concentrate and complete tasks. So what can be done to get rid of ear infections and earaches? Better yet, what can you do to prevent ear infections and earaches before they become a problem? Here, I?ll tell you the most common reasons for ear infections and list some basic methods that will help you and your friends escape the dreaded earache.

Who?s most affected by ear infections?

Children are the most common group affected by otitis media (ear infection). Three out of four children experience an earache or ear infection by the time they are three years old. Why is this important for you to know? It?s important because you?ll be able to recognize the signs of an impending ear infection for your children and do something about it before it becomes a problem.

How do earaches occur?

Did you know that swimming or taking a shower can lead to an ear infection? Ear infections are caused by trapped water, moisture and bacteria growth in the inner ear. This build up in the inner ear irritates the Eustachian tube and causes it to swell. The swelling of the Eustachian tube then puts added pressure on the inner ear and that leads to the aching that we feel. The pressure in the ear constantly builds as water and moisture are not able to drain from the ear through the nose. Alas, the inner ear infection is born. Allergies and cleaning your ear with a cotton swab can also lead to earaches and ear infections. All of the pressure in the ear eventually leads to hearing loss, itching, swelling in the ear, and pain. That?s when an earache occurs and causes discomfort. All of these ear infection symptoms can be treated and even prevented before you have a full blown earache.

Stop the pain before it starts

Having an earache is never any fun and that?s why you should take preventive measures before experiencing the pain of having one. Did you know that cleaning your nasal passage actually reduces the chance of suffering from an ear infection? The best way to rid yourself of chronic ear infection and earache is by keeping pollutants and irritants out of the Eustachian tube so that water can drain through the throat. Also, chewing gum or doing some other kind of chewing motion with the jaw will help reduce chances of getting earache or ear infection. Other than these suggestions, there are only a few ways to rid yourself of an ear infection after getting it. If you?re already experiencing the pains from an ear infection, go to your local doctor for antibiotics.

Remember, just because you feel an earache coming on, doesn?t mean you have to live with the pain of it. Take the proper measures to ensure that you and your children don?t suffer the pains of an ear infection. Now, you know what to do to rid yourself of the pressure and pain that earaches and ear infections cause almost 10 million people a year.

Benefits of an Elliptical Trainer Workout

Elliptical trainers are ideal for getting in shape and losing weight. When you workout on an elliptical trainer there are two important benefits:

  • Low-Impact Exercise
  • Upper and Lower Body Workout
  • It is for those reasons that elliptical trainers are growing in popularity. Treadmills sell more in total numbers, but elliptical sales are growing at a faster pace. They are particularly appealing to the baby boomer generation that is looking for an alternative form of exercise and workout that lessens the impact on aging joints.

    Low-Impact Exercise

The two most popular forms of exercise are walking and running. But the facts are running, and to a lesser extent walking, cause stress to your body through continual impact. In fact, runners can apply as much as 2.5 times their body weight to their joints with each stride. This is why runners and walkers often suffer from ankle, knee, hip and back injuries. Especially if they workout outdoors on concrete or asphalt. With every step there is a degree of shock absorption. This shock can be felt throughout your entire body.

Elliptical trainers reduce impact through their elliptical motion. Your feet never leave the foot pedals. There is no reverse action, or significant impact. Consequently there is virtually no shock absorption to your joints. The motion of an elliptical trainer simulates the natural path of the ankle, knee and hip joints during walking, jogging or running. And yet you still get a weight bearing workout, which builds bone density, and inhibits the onset of osteoporosis.

With a treadmill you are constantly lifting your feet and impacting the treadbelt with every stride. Treadmills are designed to absorb some of the impact, but there is still that constant jolt to your joints.

    Upper and Lower Body Workout

In addition to the low impact exercise, elliptical trainers workout both the upper and lower body simultaneously. By exercising several muscle groups at once you are able to optimize your workout. By involving more muscle mass in your aerobic workout you increase the efficiency of your workout.

When you exercise both the upper and lower body on an elliptical trainer, you utilize the quadriceps, glutes, chest, back, hamstrings, triceps and biceps. By exercising more muscle mass you attain the following benefits:

  • Improved fat mobilization
  • Build muscle endurance
  • Burn more calories and fat in less time
  • Reduced perceived rate of exertion
  • Regarding the reduced perceived rate of exertion, studies have shown that an elliptical trainer workout will often be perceived as less strenuous due to the combined upper and lower body exercise. The perception is that you get more results with less effort.

The benefits of an elliptical trainer workout have resulted in increased sales for both residential and commercial use. They are gaining in popularity at health clubs, and where several years ago you may have seen one or two, you now see rows of ellipticals.

If you haven?t used an elliptical you need to give one a try. If you are thinking about home fitness equipment, seriously consider an elliptical trainer. The benefits surpass those you receive from a treadmill, and you will be doing your body a favor.

    The Atkins Diet

    Introduction

The history of The Atkins Diet goes back to the Dr. Atkins' theory that over-consumption of and hypersensitivity to carbohydrates is the root of our problem with being overweight. The principle he based his plan on says that it is the way your body processes the carbohydrates you eat -- not how much fat you eat -- that causes you to gain weight. While most diet experts say that not everyone who has a weight problem is insulin resistant, Atkins says it is more likely than not.

    It?s working

By reducing one?s intake of carbohydrates to less than 50 grams a day, one will enter a metabolic process called ketosis, which is nothing but a state in which one?s body will start burning the fat to provide energy. Atkins also says that ketosis will affect insulin production which will prevent more fat from being formed.

    The Phases

The Atkins Diet comprises of the 4 stages: induction, ongoing weight loss, pre-maintenance and maintenance.

Induction is executed in the first fortnight of the plan, during which according to Atkins you can lose up to 15 pounds. This rapid weight loss is due to ceasing the intake of carbs to just 20 grams a day. You are limited to three cups per day. Forget about fruit and starchy vegetables like potatoes. If you consume alcoholic beverages or coffee, you better bid sayonara to those as well.

During ongoing weight loss, you can increase your carb intake by 5 grams. You will eventually reach a high and the again have to curb off the carb again.

In pre-maintenance, weight loss will happen gradually and you will be able to test certain foods to see if they could be added in your diet without resulting in weight gain.

Then the maintenance stage is there, when you may introduce some more carbs into your diet? of course not by adding the bad ones, as they will be resulting in the bringing back the weight again.

    Facts

The Atkins Diet recommends exercise. Any diet that doesn't include exercise in its recommendations will probably not be as effective and does not encourage health lifestyle change.

Person suffering from gout, kidney conditions, type I diabetes or pregnant women should not follow Atkins. According to some health experts, ketosis results in too-rapid, and unusual levels of weight loss and that the loss consists of lean body mass and water. Regardless of whichever diet you persist on, be it be Atkins or Weight Watchers, diet experts agree that it is calorie reduction that results in weight loss. After you lose weight, you can?t just revert back to your original ways of eating crabs.

    Theme

Remember, one should never start a diet without prior consultation to the doctor. This is pretty much essential with a diet like Atkins because it is so inflexible and is most likely a noteworthy change from your normal eating habits. Additionally, some researches have indicated that this type of diet may endanger the kidneys, result in sunstroke, or lead to other health problems.

Before giving ATKINs a try, ask yourself: Are you committed to limiting your carbs for good? If not, then this plan probably isn't for you, because even as Atkins himself states, returning to your previous eating habits will bring the weight back.

If you find that Atkins is not for you, you may be averse to the type of foods you are eating. That's fine -- some people simply can't tolerate eating a certain type of foods, and others feel deprived if their favorites are eliminated. If you don't feel happy and satisfied with a particular plan, it's time to find an alternative.

    Keeping Weight Loss in Mind

How often do you think about what you want to look like? Not what clothes you wear or the style of your hair, but what shape and size your want your body to be. If you find yourself struggling with weight loss, it may not be often enough.

Succeeding in losing weight can be as easy as changing how you think about you. Scientists have discovered that using the power of the imagination to visualize your goals have produced greater real world results that simply exercising and a strict diet. Those who visualize their new body create a physiological connection between their body and mind resulting in a much greater chance of success then those who do not. It may be the easiest and most important exercise in your regime.

So how does it work? The first step in reaching your goals is to write down everything you want in vivid detail. How much you weight, what you want your measurements to be, how long you can run, anything you wish to achieve write it down. Putting your thoughts on paper will increase your minds connection to your goals and help to remind you of what specifically you want. Place that list out in plain view so you may re-read it frequently and reinforce those ideas in your mind. Better still, take a couple of copies with you and place them where you are sure to see them often throughout the day. Every time your eyes fall on the list, read it. Let your mind paint the picture of a thinner and healthier body. Let your imagination take over.

The key is to be as detailed as possible with your self-vision. Visualize looking down at the scale and seeing smaller numbers. Feel your hand run down your six-pack abs, imagine how it feels gliding over the bumps. See yourself in your mind purchasing a new set of stylish clothes or swimsuit. Feel yourself trying on the clothes and looking at yourself in the mirror with your new body. Pour over that image in your mind as long as you can and sear it in your brain.

Soon the vision will become second nature and a part of your sub-consciousness. The physiological connection will begin to re-program your mind and body into believing that vision to be you. You will notice a difference in the effectiveness of your diet and workouts almost immediately. And before you realize it, you are no longer imagining those things; they are who you have become.

Use Tai Chi As An Alternative Form Of Health Therapy

More and more people are looking at the different alternative health therapy options these days. In this article, I write about the health benefits which using tai chi can bring. I hope you enjoy the read.

Tai chi is the most popular exercise in the world today. It is relatively new to the western world but is becoming more and more popular. The two thousand year old Chinese martial art is quite simple to do and has many benefits.

I have been attending tai chi classes for around a year now and it has massively helped me to control my anxiety and stress levels. Stress has been a big factor in my life and I have always struggled to think in a positive way. I now try many alternative treatments to manage my stress including meditation and tai chi. Both work very well for me.

I was introduced to tai chi by a friend. I must say that I did not really know much about it before this. He told me that it had helped him no end in controlling his depression. His name is John and he has many issues in his life which not only affect his self-confidence but also makes him very depressed at times. John has been attending tai chi classes for nearly two years and has seemingly become a new man. For whatever reason he did not tell people about what he was doing. On a night out I mentioned to him that he had been a lot happier in the recent months. This is when he talked to me about tai chi. He also asked if I would like to attend the classes with him, which I duly agreed to. I am very glad that we had this conversation as I can also quite easily spiral into a state of depression.

It may be a piece of mind thing as I know that I will be attending a tai chi once a week, but I am now very able to deal with stress and am far less anxious than I ever used to be.

People have also mentioned that I look far healthier and even that I look younger than before. This is supposed to be another benefit of tai chi, it helps to delay the aging process. This is good for somebody like me as people always thought that I was around five years older than I actually was.

Other health benefits of tai chi:

Helps to keep people mobile well into old age

    Helps to improve balance

    Helps to reduce asthma

Helps people to recover from certain injuries

Helps to boost the immune system

    Helps to lower blood pressure

In conclusion, if you are like me and are a person who is always stressed out and often depressed, tai chi could be the answer for you. Give it a go and it could change your life.

It goes without saying that tai chi is not for everybody and I would also recommend meditation, reflexology, aromatherapy, and hypnotherapy.

I am a person who likes to try new things as I am always trying to improve my life. I want to live a long, happy and stress free life. Using these forms of alternative treatments is helping me to achieve this at the moment.

Here's some information on the essential oils in this formula to help you understand why they work so effectively as an appetite suppressant:

The first ingredient, Pink Grapefruit oil, has a long standing reputation as a dieter's friend and is often recommended for treating eating disorders and overweight or obesity issues and is especially helpful for controlling sweet cravings. It has been used effectively in anti-cellulite blends.

Pink Grapefruit is a cleansing and revitalizing tonic with a bright, crisp aroma that will energize and uplift your spirit. I can't help but think of the Beatle's song, Ruby in the Sky with Diamonds, whenever I take a whiff of Pink Grapefruit because it sparkles just like diamonds and leaves me feeling all warm and happy inside.

Pink Grapefruit is also recommended for enhancing one's self esteem and definitely gives you an added sense of you can do it!

The second essential oil ingredient is Sweet Orange which has a very sweet and fresh orange aroma that's warm and inviting, a rejuvenating and uplifting tonic for the mind and emotions.

The friendly scent of Sweet Orange oil will immediately freshen and enliven your mood, creating an inner ambiance!

As with other members of the citrus family Orange's natural astringency makes it an effective tonic for the circulatory and lymphatic systems.

Sweet Orange stimulates the release of lactic acid that builds up in the muscles which causes stiffness and contributes to loss of desire for activity and movement.

Orange oil acts to replenish skin cells and smooth out an uneven complexion, lines and wrinkles. Orange is a decidedly happy oil and eases physical and emotional tension.

The third ingredient in this appetite suppressant formula is Lemon oil which acts as a cleansing tonic. It has a tart and tangy, clean lemon scent and smells like the freshly grated peel.

Lemon is a known physical tonic and helps stimulate blood and lymph circulation to effectively cleanse and tonify the body. It is useful for treating circulatory problems such as spider veins, or broken capillaries.

A strong germicide Lemon is highly antiseptic and helps to purify and rid the body of toxins. Its natural astringency makes it excellent for the removal of waste products and fatty tissue. It is popular in anti-cellulite blends.

TIP FOR USE: Inhale your Appetite Suppressant just before eating to control and curb your food cravings and hunger pangs. Not only will it stop your incessant urge to eat it will also improve your digestion and metabolism.

Nutrition Is More Than The Nutrition Facts Box

Nutrition usually only comes up when people are finally deciding to diet. By that point, the only purpose of mentioning nutrition is just to find a reason why one particular diet might be better than another. However, most fad diets do not work nearly as well as the originators claim they will, due to the nature of most strict diets.

The majority of weight-loss diets work by banning you from eating certain foods that you would normally eat. Sometimes this means eating less of a food or ingredient, but often it means totally abandoning certain food groups.

Obviously if the food you are cutting out altogether is junk food you will be better off nutritionally. The problem is that when you totally stop eating a food that you are used to eating regularly, you will get cravings for this food.

Right from the start you will have a major temptation to cheat on the diet. Eventually you will probably cheat and render the diet useless. You should therefore opt for diets that don't restrict you as severely as this.

Most diets tend to focus on one attribute of food as being a problem (such as carbohydrates, or fat). A better approach is to look at the overall nutritional value of the food.

For example, many popular fad diets focus on eliminating fat, or sugar, or carbohydrates from the diet. This gives people blinkered vision by looking at only part of the nutritional picture and leads to bad nutritional decisions.

Say you are on a diet which aims to avoid carbohydrates. You have to decide between a diet soda (which is bad for you in almost all respects but contains very few carbs) and a fruit juice drink (which is very good for you but is high in carbs). The diet would have you disregard your general health and go for the diet soda. The best choice is, of course, the fruit juice which is rich in minerals and vitamins and is much better for you.

The best way to take care of yourself is to make sure that your chosen meals are nutritious, as often as you can. Try to make sure that you eat a balanced diet, consisting of several different types of food.

When choosing food for its nutritional value it is best to avoid packaged meals and food. This food is packed full of chemicals and retains few of the minerals and vitamins present in fresh food. Pre-packaged food will also tend to have an unhealthy amount of salt in it.

If you get into the habit of eating fresh food that you cook yourself you will become much more aware of what you are eating and what is in it. You will be able to ensure you don't eat too much sodium for example and it will be obvious to you if you are eating too much of one thing or indeed too much of everything.

The most important thing to remember about nutrition is that in order to be healthy, you have to look closer at the ingredients in the food you eat. While different statistics like calories, grams of fat, and grams of sugar are good indicators, the ingredients list is key to figuring out whether or not you should eat that particular food.
